Marietta, Ga., Claims Top Spot in 2024 Digital Cities Survey
Marietta, Georgia, has been named the first-place winner in the 2024 Digital Cities Survey, thanks to its innovative and strategic approach to technology, according to Ronald Barrett, Director of Information Technology. This recognition highlights the city’s commitment to strengthening cybersecurity and enhancing resilience through proactive partnerships.
With a population of approximately 65,000, Marietta manages its own power, water, and sewer systems, allowing for a unified strategy in network security. Barrett noted the city’s collaboration with Georgia Tech to enhance its critical infrastructure, which includes electrical substations and water pump stations. "Our focus is on advancing and securing utilities data to protect the electric and water grid," Barrett said.
Marietta is also leveraging artificial intelligence to improve city services. Plans to transition the city’s contact center to the cloud include implementing chatbot functionality and AI-driven coaching tools for customer support. In an effort to address traffic congestion, the city will utilize sensors to monitor train movements and provide residents with timely notifications on alternate routes. Additionally, Barrett is exploring robotic process automation to streamline purchasing and finance operations.
With over a decade in his role, Barrett expressed pride in both his team’s growth and the supportive leadership that has contributed to Marietta’s IT advancements. "I attribute our success to the strength and dedication of my team, as well as the leadership that has empowered us," he stated.
