Trump Addresses University of Alabama Graduates Amid Protests
TUSCALOOSA, AL — President Donald Trump delivered a spirited commencement address at the University of Alabama on Thursday, emphasizing his political achievements and controversial policies. In his nearly hour-long speech, he declared, "the election was rigged," referencing the 2020 results while asserting that his 2024 campaign would be "too big to rig."
Trump’s comments mainly centered around sports policies—criticizing the participation of transgender women in women’s sports and vowing to "protect women’s sports." He also reiterated threats to cut federal funding from institutions like Harvard, focusing on his agenda for the upcoming elections.
While some students and local officials, including Tuscaloosa Mayor Walter Maddox, had hoped for emphasis on the university’s strength in research, many leaders of the UA College Republicans praised Trump’s opportunity to speak. Conversely, local organizations, including the Young Democratic Socialists of America, protested outside Coleman Coliseum, claiming Trump’s presence does not represent the student body. Student protest leader Sophia Kyemba articulated concerns regarding Trump’s education policies and the recent detainment of UA student Alireza Doroudi by ICE.
Kyemba estimated that a couple hundred demonstrators attended the protest, while over a thousand participated in a counter-rally supported by Democratic leaders, including former Congressman Beto O’Rourke and Senator Doug Jones. They stressed the importance of grassroots movements and alumni engagement in fighting against the prevailing political climate.
Despite the divided atmosphere, both events highlighted a vibrant discourse within the university and surrounding community, showcasing the deep political divides in contemporary America.
