As the US imposes export controls on key tech like the NVIDIA A100 chip, Chinese companies are turning to locally-made chips from Huawei for their AI needs. Despite focusing more on the domestic market, companies like Baidu are making strides in innovative AI research and development, although they still lack advanced AI chips. The focus on quantity over quality in patent filings is also a concern, with many developers incentivized to file patents for subsidies and promotions rather than true innovation.
China’s AI industry, driven by the private tech sector, is making efforts to catch up with global AI advancements. However, the issue of rewarding quantity over quality remains a challenge. The Chinese government views itself as a large-scale start-up incubator, aiming to foster innovation in the AI sector. Despite these challenges, China’s generative AI patents show promise, with companies like Baidu leading the way in innovative AI research and development.
