Severe Weather Alert in Alabama: Rain and Flooding Expected on Mother’s Day

As Alabama braces for severe weather this Mother’s Day, residents are advised to stay vigilant. The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for areas including Tuscaloosa, Northport, Englewood, and Whispering Hills. Notably, Tuscaloosa Regional Airport recently recorded 3.26 inches of rain, surpassing a nearly 50-year-old record.

Overnight showers are set to persist, with a potential for thunder and lightning, particularly near Highway 80. On Mother’s Day, additional thunderstorms are forecasted to sweep in from the south, likely impacting communities by the afternoon and evening. The Storm Prediction Center has categorized parts of Alabama under a marginal risk for severe weather, with possible isolated storms bringing hail, gusty winds, and worsening flash flooding conditions, especially in areas already saturated.

Many locations throughout Central Alabama have already seen over three inches of rainfall in the past couple of days, with more accumulation expected through Monday. Local authorities advise avoiding roadways during heavy rain and emphasize the "turn around, don’t drown" safety message.

As the weekend progresses, a slow-moving upper-air low will continue to influence weather patterns, resulting in scattered showers and thunderstorms into early next week. However, a shift towards warmer, sunnier days is anticipated by midweek, with temperatures expected to reach the 80s and potentially peak at 90 degrees later in the week.

Residents are encouraged to stay updated through the WVTM 13 app for the latest weather alerts and forecasts. Monitoring local news sources will also be vital as the situation evolves. Stay safe and vigilant during these unpredictable weather conditions.
