Alabama Legislature Concludes 2025 Regular Session with Significant Achievements
Montgomery, AL — The Alabama Legislature has wrapped up the 2025 Regular Session, marked by the successful passage of balanced budgets. Key figures such as Senate Budget Chair Arthur Orr and House Budget Chair Danny Garrett played crucial roles in this achievement, supported by prominent leaders like Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter and Senate President Pro Tem Garlan Gudger.
The recently approved Education Budget is particularly noteworthy, reflecting a commitment to the Alabama Community College System (ACCS), which is vital for job creation and economic development in the state. Comprising 24 colleges with over 130 campuses, the ACCS serves 155,000 students, with an impressive 96% of them being Alabamians. Notably, more than 75% of ACCS graduates remain in Alabama post-graduation.
Legislative efforts have enabled over 23,000 students to participate in dual enrollment programs, regardless of their financial circumstances. The ACCS has bucked national trends with a consistent enrollment increase of over 5% annually since 2020, directly contributing $8.1 billion, or 3% of the state’s GDP, to Alabama’s economy.
Chancellor Jimmy Baker has been pivotal in steering the ACCS towards being a cornerstone of the state’s Workforce Development Plan. The focus is clear: enhancing career and technical education to meet the growing demand for middle-skill jobs, particularly in healthcare fields like nursing and physical therapy, vital for addressing the needs of an aging population.
With $18 million dedicated to expanding health sciences into rural areas, the ACCS is well-prepared to train the next generation of healthcare professionals. As Alabama’s community colleges remain the largest employers in many districts, their vital role in local economies is increasingly recognized by state legislators.
