Rhett Marques Eyes Congressional Bid Amid Moore’s Senate Speculation
Enterprise, AL – Republican Rhett Marques, a two-term member of the Alabama House of Representatives, has confirmed he is contemplating a run for Congress if current U.S. Representative Barry Moore, R-Enterprise, chooses to pursue a Senate seat. This news follows Moore’s upcoming announcement scheduled for August 15, where he is expected to declare his candidacy to replace U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville, who is anticipated to run for governor.
In a statement to the Alabama Daily News, Marques expressed his readiness to explore options contingent upon Moore’s decision. “I’m happy in the Alabama House, but if Barry does run for Senate, we’ll look at options, see what doors open, and go from there,” he said.
Marques’s consideration for Congress follows the previous election cycle, where Moore won his seat after congressional redistricting led him out of the 2nd District, defeating incumbent Congressman Jerry Carl, R-Mobile. Carl is expected to announce his intentions to reclaim his seat after Moore’s statement, hinting at a “major announcement” soon.
While Marques is rooted on the east side of the congressional district, he has deep connections to the west, having spent 27 years in Spanish Fort before relocating to Enterprise in 2000. Discussing key issues in the district, Marques highlighted infrastructure in Mobile, agricultural concerns in the Wiregrass, and the significance of Fort Rucker. Yet, he remained cautious, noting, “We’re not closing doors. If nothing opens, I’m happy where I am.”
With potential shifts on the political landscape, all eyes will be on Barry Moore’s announcement next week as candidates gear up for the evolving race in Alabama’s 1st Congressional District.
