Southern Baptists Advocate for Reversal of Same-Sex Marriage Legislation

Southern Baptist Convention Calls for Overturn of Same-Sex Marriage Decision

In a significant move, the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), the largest Protestant denomination in the U.S., has formally declared its desire to overturn the 2015 Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage in a recent resolution passed at its annual meeting in Dallas. Known as Resolution No. 5, the statement reflects the collective sentiments of over 10,000 attendees and articulates the SBC’s views on various social issues, although it holds no binding power over individual churches.

The resolution condemns the Supreme Court’s Obergefell v. Hodges ruling, stating it "defies God’s design for marriage and family" and contributes to societal confusion. It further critiques “willful childlessness” amid declining fertility rates and rebukes modern fertility treatments, citing concerns over the dignity of human life and commercial surrogacy.

Additionally, the SBC has expressed strong opposition to the so-called normalization of transgender ideology, particularly regarding the participation of biological males in female sports and medical transitions for minors. The resolution claims this shift constitutes a rebellion against divine design, suggesting it unjustly harms children and women.

Beyond these specific issues, the SBC’s resolution calls on legislators to enact laws that uphold traditional views of marriage and family, urging the protection of children and parental rights in education and health care. It emphasizes the importance of laws that reflect biblical principles and the natural order regarding human life.

This resolution continues the SBC’s long-standing advocacy against Roe v. Wade, which was recently overturned by the Supreme Court in a 2022 decision. As debates around these topics intensify, the SBC seeks to assert its influence on both individual beliefs and legislative practices concerning family and morality in America.
