Actor Sophia Bush and soccer player Ashlyn Harris have both joined the Human Rights Campaign board, the nation’s largest LGBTQ advocacy organization. Harris, a former goalkeeper for the U.S. women’s national soccer team, expressed her commitment to fighting for LGBTQ+ justice and equality. The two women became a fan-favorite queer power couple after Bush publicly came out and announced her relationship with Harris in an emotional essay for Glamour magazine in April. Bush, known for her role in “One Tree Hill,” reflected on the increasingly hostile political climate toward LGBTQ people as a key factor in her decision to come out.
The Human Rights Campaign praised Bush as a dedicated activist and philanthropist who supports projects empowering girls and women. They noted her involvement in Union Heritage Ventures, a majority Black- and women-owned capital firm, as well as her co-founding and board membership of I am a voter, a nonpartisan voting and civic engagement organization. Harris, meanwhile, was recognized for her courage and dedication to fostering fairness and driving societal change, particularly in her role as a plaintiff in the equal pay lawsuit against U.S. Soccer.
The organization highlighted Harris’s involvement in the Women’s Sports Foundation, founded by tennis icon Billie Jean King, dedicated to advancing women’s opportunities in sports. Together, Bush and Harris bring their activism and dedication to the Human Rights Campaign board, aiming to advocate for LGBTQ rights in the face of increasing discrimination and legislative challenges facing the community.
