SMU Secures Final Spot in College Football Playoff, Undefeated Oregon Ranked No. 1
In a historic move, SMU clinched the last open spot in the College Football Playoff, beating out Alabama in the selection process. The expanded 12-team bracket placed undefeated Oregon at the top spot, marking a new era in college football.
The selection committee favored SMU (11-2) over Alabama (9-3) due to their one fewer loss, despite the latter’s tougher schedule. Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel, the committee chair, highlighted that the decision was based on a comprehensive assessment of both teams’ performances.
The tournament will kick off on Dec. 20-21 with first-round games involving teams seeded 5-12, with the national title game set for Jan. 20 in Atlanta. Georgia, Boise State, and Arizona State received first-round byes.
Clemson secured the 12th seed following a dramatic win over SMU, resulting in Alabama missing out on a spot. The tournament also saw Texas, Penn State, Notre Dame, and Ohio State hosting first-round games.
The Big Ten leads with four teams in the playoff, followed by the SEC and ACC. The committee’s decision stirred controversy, as it awarded ACC a second bid, sparking discussions around biases in the sport favoring certain conferences.
Automatic byes for conference champions and bids made the bracket unpredictable. Despite concerns about potential matchups, Oregon coach Dan Lanning emphasized the challenging journey to winning a national championship. Georgia, with quarterback Carson Beck’s injury, faces uncertainties heading into the Sugar Bowl.
Overall, the inaugural College Football Playoff bracket has set the stage for an exciting and unpredictable postseason, with teams poised to battle it out for the ultimate title.
