Political Divisions Thicken in Lipscomb as Election Day Approaches
Lipscomb, AL—Political tensions in the small town of Lipscomb are palpable as three candidates prepare for the upcoming mayoral election scheduled for August 26. Incumbent Mayor Tanja Baldwin, who is seeking a second term, faces fierce competition from former police officer Robin "Rob" Sims and Councilwoman Lakendria Poellnitz.
The town of about 2,000 residents has been plagued by economic and political strife, struggling to maintain a stable tax base and attract businesses. Previous attempts to generate revenue through bingo have led to legal issues, including forced closures and state raids.
Baldwin, who has increased city reserves from $10,000 to $1 million during her term, highlights her accomplishments in clearing abandoned buildings and expanding the police force. "The city is getting better, and I have unfinished work to do," she stated on social media, urging voters to focus on achievements rather than challenges.
Contrastingly, Poellnitz and Sims argue that the town is suffering from serious leadership issues. Poellnitz, a vocal critic of Baldwin, has called for transparency and a revamp of the police department. She accuses Baldwin of fostering an environment of corruption and retaliation, particularly in her handling of Police Chief Lanita Neal. "We deserve leaders who follow the law," Poellnitz asserted.
Sims supports Poellnitz’s critiques, claiming he was fired from the police department as retaliation for his political aspirations. He emphasizes the need for collaboration between the mayor and council, vowing to restore trust within city leadership.
In addition to the mayoral race, residents will also elect new council members, with various contested and uncontested races across five districts, setting the stage for an intense election in the heart of Lipscomb.
