Severe Thunderstorm Alert Issued in Central Alabama
CHILTON COUNTY, AL – The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm alert for Chilton, Coosa, Tallapoosa, and Elmore counties, effective from 3:47 PM until 4:45 PM on Saturday. The alert warns residents of potential wind gusts up to 40 mph as Doppler radar indicates strong thunderstorms moving southeast at 30 mph.
The areas most affected include Prattville, Alexander City, Millbrook, Wetumpka, and surrounding communities. "Gusty winds could lead to downed tree limbs and flying debris," the weather service warned. Residents are advised to seek indoor shelter due to the accompanying threats of torrential rainfall, localized flooding, and frequent lightning strikes.
Each year, approximately 25 million lightning strikes occur across the U.S., claiming around 20 lives, according to safety experts. In light of the current storm conditions, it is crucial for residents to implement a lightning safety plan, stay vigilant for changes in weather, and seek shelter if thunder is heard.
Indoor safety measures include avoiding the use of corded appliances and refraining from using plumbing fixtures during storms. After the last lightning strike, individuals should wait at least 30 minutes before resuming outdoor activities.
For those without indoor shelter, experts recommend avoiding open fields and isolated trees to minimize lightning exposure. Always maintain a safe distance from watery areas, where swift currents can pose additional dangers.
With heavy rain expected, safety continues to be a priority. Motorists are urged to slow down and follow safe driving practices, including maintaining safe following distances and making sure headlights are activated for increased visibility.
