Severe Rain, High Winds, and Root Rot Toppling Trees Throughout Central Alabama

Severe Storms Raise Concerns Over Tree Stability in Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Alabama has experienced a series of strong storms over the past month, leading to increased fears of flooding, downed trees, and lightning strikes. With the ground saturated since early May, conditions remain precarious, making it difficult for the earth to dry out. The combination of additional rainfall and strong winds raises the risk of trees falling, alarming residents and experts alike.

"Due to the excessive rain, we’re seeing a significant increase in root rot," stated Andria McNutt, owner of McNutt Enterprises, in an interview with WVTM 13. Many homeowners might not easily recognize the signs of root rot, which can manifest as elevated ground beneath a tree, indicating an underlying problem. McNutt highlighted that leaning trees can signify potential danger, notably the pine and oak varieties, which have generated the most concern.

The urgency of the situation was underscored by field supervisor Patrick McNutt, who explained, “It doesn’t take much at all for a tree to fall if it’s showing signs of distress; winds of 30 to 40 miles per hour can be sufficient.” He advised residents to conduct regular inspections of their trees, focusing on damaged limbs or signs of decay, to mitigate risks. Quick action can prevent potential disasters and ensure safety in the face of worsening weather conditions.

With storms continuing to pose a threat, residents are urged to be vigilant. Seeing signs of distress in trees should prompt immediate evaluation and, if necessary, removal to prevent potential hazards as the stormy weather persists.
