Senator Britt introduces bill to enhance safety of passenger vehicles

U.S. Senator Katie Britt, a Republican from Alabama, has introduced the She DRIVES Act, a bipartisan legislation aimed at raising vehicle crash testing standards to improve passenger vehicle safety. The bill focuses on including female crash test dummies to better reflect the full range of drivers and passengers on the road, as studies have shown that women are more likely to die or be seriously injured in car crashes compared to men.

According to a press release from Britt’s office, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data shows that 1,300 women die unnecessarily every year due to gender disparities in crash testing. The She DRIVES Act aims to address these disparities and save billions of dollars by preventing injuries and deaths.

The bill has gained support and passed unanimously out of the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee, with plans to move to the Senate floor for consideration. Britt emphasizes the importance of modernizing vehicle safety tests to protect all drivers and passengers, stating that including female crash test dummies will make cars safer for everyone.

The She DRIVES Act aims to address deficiencies in current crash testing programs, including the lack of representation for females, the elderly, and other vulnerable groups. The legislation seeks to update standards and utilize the most advanced testing devices available to ensure the safety of all individuals on the road.
