Saturday ALGOP Meeting to Focus on the 2026 Elections

Alabama Republican Party Gears Up for 2026 Elections at Annual Meeting

Montgomery, AL – The Alabama Republican Party (ALGOP) is set to convene this Saturday for its annual summer meeting, with a keen focus on the upcoming 2026 election cycle. The main agenda item will be a resolution establishing the qualifying date for Republican candidates vying for state and federal offices.

ALGOP Chairman John Wahl indicated that while additional resolutions and some bylaw adjustments may emerge, the primary resolution will take center stage. “We’re preparing for 2026, identifying target races across the state, and actively recruiting candidates for those positions,” Wahl stated, emphasizing the party’s readiness to tackle electoral challenges both in Alabama and nationally.

Attendance at recent ALGOP meetings has been robust and largely controversy-free, as party members are aligning their strategies for the forthcoming election. Originally, the meeting was to feature keynote remarks from Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley; however, a Friday dinner featuring him has been postponed following his endorsement by former President Donald Trump for a North Carolina U.S. Senate seat.

Notably, Alabama’s primaries are scheduled for May 19, 2026. While Wahl advocates for closed primaries to limit Democratic and independent voter participation in GOP elections, he does not foresee any significant resolutions on this matter being introduced, despite a measure passed in 2022.

As for his political future, Wahl has yet to disclose whether he will pursue a bid for lieutenant governor, stating his current focus is on the party’s readiness for the electoral landscape ahead. "After our meeting on Saturday, I’ll take some time to consult my family and evaluate next steps," he affirmed.

The meeting represents a critical moment for the ALGOP as it lays the groundwork for a competitive 2026 election cycle.
