Samford University’s $700 Million Creekside Project Faces Public Scrutiny
Homewood, AL – Samford University’s proposed $700 million Creekside development is set for a public hearing before the Homewood City Council on Monday. The ambitious 27-acre project, which includes a hotel, restaurants, and 435 housing units across Lakeshore Parkway from the university’s main campus, has sparked significant community concern regarding its environmental and economic implications.
Originally introduced in March, the project faced immediate backlash, especially over plans to relocate college athletic facilities to an area home to critical salamander habitats. In response to these environmental concerns, Samford and its development partner, Landmark Development, amended their proposal in April, suggesting the relocation of the college track and soccer fields to the city-owned Homewood Soccer Park. However, this idea was later retracted due to lack of city approval, leading to confusion and frustration among residents.
Mayor Alex Wyatt emphasized the necessity for the city council’s approval regarding any changes to the soccer fields, while council member Jalete Nelms expressed surprise at the extent of community opposition. The financial aspect of the project has also stirred debate, with Landmark requesting a staggering $26 million in tax incentives from Homewood, raising questions about the project’s viability if such support is not secured.
Recent discussions have shifted focus from environmental concerns to economic implications, with residents wary of the project competing against existing businesses in Homewood’s downtown district. Council member Andrew Wolverton noted the overwhelming public dissent, stating he had not received a single message of support for the development.
The upcoming public hearing at 6 p.m. is expected to draw extensive community engagement, as council members anticipate a lengthy discussion on the proposed project’s future.
