Rogers advocates for increased defense spending in budget talks

House Armed Services Chairman Mike Rogers is advocating for increased defense spending as Congress debates a budget plan for the next decade. The GOP House budget resolution includes a $100 billion increase in defense spending, but Rogers believes more is needed. The Senate budget resolution calls for a $150 billion increase, focusing on growing the U.S. Navy, air and missile defense, and nuclear defense. President Donald Trump endorsed the House budget resolution, while the Senate continues to work on its version this week.

Rogers emphasized the importance of boosting military investments due to threats from Russia, China, and Iran. He aims to increase military spending to over 4% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), a goal that will require significant annual appropriations. Rogers is also working with Rep. Adam Smith to identify and eliminate “obsolete” military programs to reduce waste.

While defense and border security are receiving funding increases in the reconciliation process, other areas like agriculture and health care could face cuts. The House and Senate must adopt the same budget resolution to begin reconciliation, which would allow the legislation to pass with a simple majority in the Senate. Rogers stressed the importance of allies and partners also increasing defense spending to address global threats.
