Robert Benton, Academy Award-Winning Director of ‘Kramer vs. Kramer,’ Passes Away at 92

Robert Benton, the renowned Oscar-winning filmmaker, passed away at 92 due to natural causes at his Manhattan home. His son, John Benton, announced the news. Benton had a significant impact on Hollywood, co-creating the iconic film “Bonnie and Clyde,” which challenged conventional storytelling and contributed to a new era of creative freedom in cinema. Over his 40-year career, he earned six Oscar nominations, winning three awards for “Kramer vs. Kramer” (which he wrote and directed) and “Places in the Heart.”

Born in Waxahachie, Texas, Benton struggled with severe dyslexia but went on to have a prolific career, adapting notable novels into films. “Bonnie and Clyde,” which faced initial criticism for its graphic violence, became a cultural touchstone after its 1967 release. While Benton’s original story included bold depictions of sexuality, the final version was altered by other filmmakers. He later produced acclaimed works such as “Kramer vs. Kramer,” which depicted shifting family dynamics and earned five Academy Awards, cementing Benton’s reputation.

His subsequent film, “Places in the Heart,” drew from his personal history and earned him further accolades. Throughout his career, he was known for fostering strong relationships with actors, guiding them to Oscar-winning performances. Despite experiencing creative dry spells and setbacks, Benton found resurgence with films like “Nobody’s Fool” in 1994, earning another Oscar nomination.

Benton’s passion for filmmaking stemmed from his early love for movies, cultivated by his father. He attended the University of Texas and Columbia University and served in the U.S. Army. He is remembered for his significant contributions to film and for the impact he had on actors and colleagues throughout his career.
