Robby Ashford Named Wake Forest’s Starting Quarterback for Week 1
Wake Forest University has officially named Robby Ashford as its starting quarterback for the upcoming season opener against Kennesaw State this Friday, as reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel. This marks a significant moment for Ashford, who transitions into his sixth year of college football after a varied journey through multiple programs.
Ashford, a former standout at Hoover High School in Alabama, previously played at Oregon, Auburn, and South Carolina before landing at Wake Forest. His college career saw him participating in 11 games across different teams, with his most recent stint at South Carolina yielding one start and a total of 324 passing yards, complemented by two touchdowns and notable contributions on the ground with 227 rushing yards and two more touchdowns.
Despite a disappointing start at Oregon, where he did not see the field in 2020 and 2021, Ashford found his footing at Auburn. He played two seasons there, where he accumulated a total of 2,082 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions over his career. His versatility is highlighted by 240 rushing attempts, resulting in 1,154 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Ashford’s selection as Wake Forest’s QB1 demonstrates the coaching staff’s confidence and provides a fresh start in his collegiate journey. Competing against Charlotte transfer Deshawn Purdie, who had his paperwork for Florida retracted, Ashford ultimately emerged as the frontrunner.
Fans can look forward to seeing his debut on the ACC Network, where he aims to lead the Demon Deacons to a successful season, kicking off with a home game against Kennesaw State.
