RFK Jr. Dismisses Entire CDC Vaccine Advisory Committee

Health Secretary Kennedy Removes All Members of Vaccine Advisory Committee Amid Controversy

In a significant shake-up, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has dismissed all 17 members of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), which provides guidance to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on vaccine usage. This decision has drawn sharp backlash from major healthcare and public health organizations.

Kennedy, known for his anti-vaccine stance prior to his appointment, indicated he plans to replace the committee with his own selections. His recent opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal underscored his belief that a “clean sweep” was necessary to restore public confidence in vaccine science. Historically, ACIP appointments have not been seen as partisan; however, the ousted committee members were all appointed during the Biden administration.

Dr. Helen Keipp Talbot, the former chair of the committee, and other members expressed surprise at their abrupt termination, receiving no specific reasons. Notably, Dr. Noel Brewer, a behavioral scientist who focuses on vaccination behavior, remarked on the importance of ACIP’s recommendations for public trust and insurance coverage.

Critics, including Dr. Tom Frieden and Dr. Georges Benjamin, condemned Kennedy’s actions as politically motivated, potentially undermining years of scientific integrity in public health. They warned that this move could lead to a decrease in vaccination rates, thereby increasing the risk of vaccine-preventable diseases.

Senator Bill Cassidy, a physician who initially supported Kennedy’s nomination, voiced concerns that the new appointments might lack relevant expertise. He reaffirmed his commitment to ensure the integrity of the committee moving forward.

Kennedy’s decision marks a pivotal moment in U.S. public health policy as the future of vaccine guidance hangs in the balance.
