Alabama GOP Voters Demand Economic Focus Ahead of 2026 Primaries
In a clear message to state lawmakers, a recent Cygnal poll revealed that Alabama Republican primary voters are prioritizing economic issues over cultural battles as they prepare for the 2026 primaries. Conducted in late July, the poll of 400 GOP voters indicated that concerns around inflation, cost of living, taxes, and immigration dominate their landscape, with nearly 80% identifying these as their top priorities.
Mitchell Brown, a Cygnal partner, shared these findings at the Business Council of Alabama’s annual Government Affairs Conference, emphasizing that economic policies will resonate with voters. "Economic policy is just good politics," he stated, highlighting the disconnect between voters’ stances and recent legislative focuses on cultural issues such as educational content and reproductive health. Notably, 59% of Republican voters prefer a legislative agenda centered on economic issues rather than culture-war debates.
The poll also sheds light on the upcoming political races, with U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville, a prospective candidate for governor, boasting a 69% favorability rating among voters. In the race for his upcoming Senate seat, Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall leads the pack, garnering 24% support, while a significant portion of voters, 57.5%, remain undecided following speculation about basketball coach Bruce Pearl’s candidacy.
Additionally, the poll revealed that support for small and medium-sized businesses is tepid, with almost a quarter of respondents describing the state as "unsupportive." President Donald Trump remains a dominant figure among Alabama Republicans, enjoying an 80% favorable rating.
As the 2026 primaries approach, Alabama GOP leaders may need to recalibrate their focus toward economic legislation to align with voter expectations.
