A groundbreaking study conducted by the Earth Commission has shown that while the Earth is facing growing environmental challenges and climate instability, there is still a possibility for humanity to create a safe and just space for everyone. The study suggests that a radical transformation of global politics, economics, and society is necessary to ensure a fair distribution of resources, the phase-out of fossil fuels, and the adoption of sustainable technologies and lifestyles.
Published in the Lancet Planetary Health journal, the study outlines a “safe and just corridor” that would enable all humans to live healthy lives within planetary boundaries. However, under the current highly unequal and fossil-fuel intensive conditions, it is impossible for all individuals to thrive within this corridor. The study identifies vulnerable populations around the world who are disproportionately affected by climate breakdown, biodiversity loss, pollution, and water shortages.
To achieve a safe and just space, the study proposes reducing resource use by top emitters, adopting renewable energy, and implementing progressive taxation and resource pricing. The authors stress that urgent action is needed to prevent further breaches of planetary boundaries and ensure a sustainable future.
While the current global political climate may not seem conducive to the necessary changes, the authors believe that with a focus on global justice and safety, governments and public opinion can shift towards a more equitable and sustainable future. The study highlights the importance of addressing inequalities and implementing policies to protect the planet and promote social stability.
