Press Release: Sewell Advocates for Voting Rights Legislation on 60th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act

U.S. Representative Terri Sewell (D-Alabama) has renewed her call for Congress to pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, marking the 60th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. In a poignant video posted on social media, Sewell reflected on the historic legislation signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson and emphasized the ongoing struggle for voting rights.

“Sixty years later, I would have never guessed I would be a member of Congress, carrying this seminal piece of legislation,” Sewell remarked. She underscored that progress requires constant vigilance and advocacy. Since 2013, she has introduced the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act annually, yet it has faced repeated setbacks in the Senate, despite passing the House in both 2021 and 2022.

The act seeks to restore and modernize the Voting Rights Act’s preclearance requirements, mandating federal approval for jurisdictions with records of racial discrimination before altering voting laws. This provision, originally outlined in Section 5 of the 1965 Act, was invalidated by the Supreme Court in 2013.

“The Voting Rights Act is on life support,” Sewell’s office declared, demanding Congress act to combat voter suppression and ensure accessible voting for all Americans. Sewell highlighted the legacy of civil rights icon John Lewis, urging citizens to advocate for their rights and engage in social change.

Endorsed by various civil rights organizations, including the Brennan Center for Justice, the act is currently before the U.S. Senate, introduced by Senator Raphael Warnock (D-Georgia). This anniversary serves as a crucial reminder of the need to protect and advance voting rights for a diverse democracy. Janai Nelson, President of the Legal Defense Fund, reiterated the urgency of restoring voting rights, emphasizing the collective responsibility to uphold democracy.
