The body of a young man, severely burned, was discovered on Saturday in Stone Mountain Park, Georgia. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is collaborating with local authorities to investigate the incident. According to John Bankhead, spokesperson for the Stone Mountain Department of Public Safety, the body was found by a hiker around 8:18 a.m., approximately 100 yards from the Summit Skyride cable car tower, in an area that is not remote but infrequently hiked.
An autopsy is scheduled for Monday with the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office. While officials have a possible identity for the deceased, it hasn’t been confirmed. Investigators identified the potential name based on personal belongings and a vehicle found nearby. The nature of the fire associated with the body has prompted arson investigators from the DeKalb County Fire Rescue Department to become involved in the case.
The park, which features various attractions, including a lakeside resort, is managed by a state authority in conjunction with an amusement park contractor. It is known for its controversial high-relief sculpture depicting Confederate figures, completed between 1924 and 1972. The discovery of the body has raised questions and intrigue, with authorities noting that such incidents are rare in the park, leading Bankhead to describe the situation as “odd” and “peculiar.” Stone Mountain Park is located about 20 miles east of Atlanta. An active investigation is ongoing as authorities gather more information surrounding the circumstances of the man’s death.
