A fatal law enforcement shooting in Illinois occurred after deputies were dispatched to the home of Sonya Massey following a report of a possible prowler. Sangamon County Deputy Sean Grayson, who has been charged with first-degree murder, shot Massey in the face during a dispute over a pot of steaming water in her kitchen. Grayson did not render aid to Massey after the shooting, and discouraged his partner from doing so according to court records. Grayson pleaded not guilty at his arraignment and has been denied bail due to being deemed a threat to the community.
The Illinois State Police summary of the shooting revealed that Grayson drew his weapon when Massey threw the hot water at a chair near him. Despite not attempting to de-escalate the situation, Grayson was found to be justified in pointing his weapon at Massey to make her comply, but not in shooting her. Grayson was subsequently fired from his position by the Sangamon County Sheriff for not acting according to standards.
Ben Crump, the lawyer for the Massey family, said that Grayson’s indictment was a step towards justice for Sonya’s loved ones. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker expressed anger over Massey, an unarmed Black woman, being shot by law enforcement after calling for protection. Grayson is scheduled to appear in court on August 26. The incident has sparked outrage from protesters and officials and further highlights the issue of police violence.
