Record-Breaking Heat Wave Approaching Central, Midwest, and Eastern U.S.

The onset of summer is bringing a significant heat wave to various regions across the United States. A heat dome is expected to form over the central U.S. and extend to the Midwest and Northeast over the weekend. The National Weather Service has issued heat advisories and extreme heat warnings for multiple states, forecasting triple-digit temperatures coupled with high humidity through next week. Parts of the Upper Midwest and Great Plains may experience record high minimum temperatures, while record highs in the eastern U.S. are anticipated next week.

Much of the country east of the Rocky Mountains could see temperatures exceeding 90°F, with places like Denver expected to exceed 100°F. Cities such as Chicago, Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. are also projected to experience dangerously high temperatures. Starting Friday, states like Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, South Dakota, and Colorado may face conditions that warrant canceling outdoor activities, particularly due to health risks for vulnerable populations such as infants, children, and seniors. By Saturday, these extreme conditions are likely to spread across the Midwest, affecting parts of New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New Jersey by Sunday.

This heat wave poses an added risk as many may not be acclimated to warmer temperatures following a cooler, wet period preceding summer. Climate change is noted to have intensified the frequency and severity of heat waves. Health experts advise increased fluid intake, use of fans or air conditioning, and limited outdoor activity during extreme heat. If someone feels unwell due to heat, they are encouraged to take a cold bath to help lower their body temperature.
