Pope Francis experienced two episodes of acute respiratory insufficiency on Monday due to a buildup of mucus in his lungs, leading to bronchospasms. He underwent two bronchoscopies and was put on non-invasive mechanical ventilation. The Vatican stated that Francis remained alert and his prognosis was reserved. He had a restful night on Sunday following a respiratory crisis last week. Despite concerns of a new lung infection, doctors found no signs of infection. Francis has been hospitalized since Feb. 14 for pneumonia. He received visits from Vatican officials and skipped his weekly public blessing. In a message, Francis expressed gratitude for the care he received and prayed for peace in Ukraine. He described his hospitalization as a solidarity with the sick and suffering. As a young man, Francis had part of his lung removed and was admitted to the hospital when his bronchitis worsened. Cardinal Konrad Krajewski led a prayer for the Pope’s health at St. Peter’s Square. The Pope’s condition remains guarded, and prayers for his recovery continue.
