Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia announced on Friday that the man responsible for the late-night ambush that killed one officer and injured two others intentionally set out to shoot police officers. The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Corey Cobb-Bey, approached officer Darron Burks while he was parked at a community center and fatally shot him before opening fire on two other officers who arrived on the scene.
Chief Garcia stated that the officers were targeted simply for the uniform they wore and the job they bravely performed. Cobb-Bey was pursued by police to Lewisville, where he was shot and killed after pointing a shotgun at officers.
The investigation revealed that the shootings were premeditated, with Cobb-Bey posting about his problems on social media and hinting at an upcoming event. Multiple weapons were recovered from the scenes, including two shotguns and handguns.
Officer Burks had recently joined the force after teaching math at a high school for 17 years. His former school principal praised him for his dedication to serving others and making a positive impact.
Dallas continues to reel from this tragic attack, which brought back memories of a 2016 ambush that killed five officers. However, despite the tragedy, the city remains united in support of law enforcement and mourning the loss of a dedicated officer who made a difference in the community.
