Pilot unharmed as F-35 military jet sustains ‘substantial damage’ in accident at Alaska base

A U.S. Air Force pilot safely ejected from an F-35 fighter jet that crashed during a training exercise at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska. The pilot declared an inflight emergency and was in stable condition following the crash. The incident caused significant damage to the aircraft. An investigation will be conducted to prevent future occurrences. Eielson was selected to host 54 F-35s in 2016, leading to a costly expansion with new buildings and housing units. The F-35 has remarkable capabilities, being able to fly for more than 12 hours and reach almost anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere in one mission. Previous incidents involving F-35s include a crash in New Mexico in May where the pilot was seriously injured and a crash in South Carolina in 2023 where the pilot ejected unnecessarily. The safety of pilots and the prevention of future crashes will be a priority for the U.S. Air Force.
