Pentagon to prohibit transgender individuals from enlisting in the military and halts gender transition processes

The U.S. military has announced that transgender individuals will no longer be allowed to join the military and that procedures associated with gender transition for service members will be stopped. This decision was outlined in a memo from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth that was filed in court. President Donald Trump signed an executive order targeting transgender troops, stating that a man identifying as a woman was not suited for military service. All new accessions for individuals with a history of gender dysphoria are paused, as well as all medical procedures associated with gender transition for service members. Individuals already in the military with gender dysphoria will be treated with dignity and respect. While advocates estimate there are around 15,000 transgender service members, officials say the number is in the low thousands. A poll showed that 58% of Americans support openly transgender individuals serving in the military, down from 71% in 2019. A U.S. judge has requested that six military members who sued to stop the executive order be allowed to remain in service until further court proceedings are held. Miriam Perelson, a transgender service member, alleged mistreatment, including being required to leave the sleeping area for female troops and not being allowed to use female restrooms.
