Pentagon to deploy nearly 3,000 more active-duty troops to the U.S.-Mexico border

The Pentagon is sending nearly 3,000 additional active-duty troops to the U.S.-Mexico border as President Donald Trump aims to crack down on illegal immigration. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered elements of a Stryker brigade combat team and a general support aviation battalion for the mission, with forces arriving in the coming weeks. Fort Carson is sending 2,400 soldiers from the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, while another 500 soldiers from Fort Stewart’s 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade will also be deployed.

The Strykers will provide transportation and engineering support as well as detection and monitoring, but will not be involved in interdiction or deportation operations. The aviation brigade will assist in moving personnel, equipment, and supplies. In total, about 9,200 U.S. troops are at the southern border, including those deployed under federal orders and National Guard troops under governors’ control.

The new troops will aim to reinforce and expand current border security operations, sealing the border and protecting the territorial integrity of the United States. Trump is pushing to expand the military’s role in shutting down the border and returning detained migrants to their home countries. This deployment is part of a long history of military personnel being sent to the border to address migration, drug trafficking, and transnational crime.
