Pakistan Reports Indian Missile Strikes on Three Air Bases

Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated sharply, with India reportedly launching missiles at three air bases in Pakistan. According to Pakistan’s military spokesman, Lt. Gen. Ahmad Sharif, most of these missiles were intercepted. The Indian air strikes follow a gun massacre last month that India attributes to Pakistan, which has heightened animosities between the nuclear-armed neighbors.

Sharif claimed that while many missiles were intercepted, some struck areas in eastern Punjab, India, including the city of Amritsar. He emphasized that the Pakistani air force assets remained intact and considered the missile firing a serious provocation. Pakistan’s state media has indicated that retaliatory attacks are currently underway, targeting unspecified locations in India.

Following the missile incidents, the Indian army reported sightings of drones near its border with Pakistan. They stated these drones were tracked and addressed in various regions, including Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian military has claimed to have thwarted multiple drone and missile attacks from Pakistan, though these assertions are disputed by Islamabad.

The recent violence follows a deadly attack on April 22 in Indian-administered Kashmir that killed 26 civilians, leading India to blame Pakistan for supporting terrorist activities. Prior to the missile exchanges, India conducted airstrikes on sites in Pakistani territory, leading to significant civilian casualties, which Pakistan contested by claiming it negated Indian air defenses.

While both nations have engaged in aggressive military posturing, independent verification of each side’s claims has not been possible. The ongoing cycle of retaliation continues to threaten stability in the region, and the situation remains closely monitored by both governments.
