Ongoing storm surveys to determine the number of tornadoes that hit Alabama overnight

The National Weather Service is currently conducting surveys across Alabama to assess damage following severe storms that occurred mostly overnight. Although the storms have passed, there is no expectation for additional severe weather today. The storms resulted in numerous tornado warnings and extensive damage including downed trees and power lines due to high wind gusts.

Survey teams are focused on areas near Russellville, Tuscumbia, Rogersville, Boaz, and southern Hale and Perry counties. Reports of damage have been widespread in these areas, prompting the need for further investigation. The weather service is also planning to assess damage in Montgomery, Macon, Elmore, and Tallapoosa counties.

While South Alabama managed to avoid the worst of the tornado-warned storms, reports of downed trees and power lines have been received in that region. Over 110,000 power outages were still being reported in Alabama as of Sunday morning. The survey teams will determine whether the damage was caused by tornadoes or straight-line winds and assign a preliminary rating using the Enhanced Fujita scale.

The weather service is urging residents to report any storm damage they have experienced. More information on the findings of the survey teams is expected to be released later today.
