Officials from Alabama State Parks, the Von Braun Astronomical Society, and NASA dedicated a Moon Tree, grown from seeds flown on American spacecraft in lunar orbit, at Monte Sano State Park. The tree, a loblolly pine, was received by VBAS as part of NASA’s Artemis I mission in 2022 and planted in the park. This partnership between VBAS and Alabama State Parks celebrates the future of space exploration and honors the Apollo 14 Moon Trees program. The Moon Tree, near the John Scoble Memorial Pavilion, will have permanent signage and fencing installed to commemorate its significance. Visitors are encouraged to use the #MonteSanoMoonTree hashtag when posting about it on social media. Alex Hall, president of VBAS, described the Moon Tree as an inspirational symbol of the relationship between Earth and space and a reminder to look to the stars. The planting of the Moon Tree in Huntsville, where the loblolly seed was sent into lunar orbit, holds special significance for the community involved in space exploration. This Moon Tree is the first awarded to an astronomical society and recognizes the significant education and outreach done by the VBAS volunteers. The partnership between VBAS and NASA has spanned decades, culminating in the planting of this amazing Moon Tree at Monte Sano State Park.
