Nucor Buildings Group to Lay Off 79 Employees in Alabama as Eufaula Plant Shutdown Commences

Nucor Buildings Group, a steel producer, has announced plans to close its facility in Eufaula, Alabama, resulting in the layoff of 79 workers by late April. The decision to close the facility was described as a strategic business move to align the workforce with current market demands. The company will redirect production backlog to its Texas facility and is assisting affected employees in finding opportunities at other Nucor divisions in the state.

The Eufaula service center, owned by Nucor and operated by its subsidiary American Buildings, is the only Alabama facility listed on the American Buildings website. Previously, in the fall of 2020, the facility laid off approximately 230 employees due to the impact of the Covid pandemic. Following the layoffs, the plant was renamed as “Nucor Buildings Group Texas-Alabama” and focused solely on producing structural parts for metal buildings.

The upcoming job cuts in Eufaula contribute to the increasing number of employees impacted by mass layoffs or plant closures in Alabama this year, with a total of nearly 1,500 workers affected. Federal law requires large employers to file a public WARN notice with the state 60 days in advance of such actions, which are then published by the Alabama Department of Commerce. The closure of the Eufaula facility reflects the challenges faced by industries in adjusting to market demands and economic conditions.
