Severe Geomagnetic Storm Alert Issued: North Alabama Could Catch a Glimpse of the Northern Lights

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The NOAA NWS Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) has issued a severe geomagnetic storm alert, categorized as "G4." This type of storm can lead to disturbances in Earth’s magnetic field, affecting satellite operations, GPS functionality, and electrical voltages. One exciting consequence of such storms is the potential visibility of the aurora borealis, or northern lights, even in southern states like Alabama.

While the SWPC forecasts that the aurora will not be directly overhead in Alabama, residents may have a chance to glimpse the colorful lights along the horizon if they gaze northward. Previous "G4" storms have enabled sightings of the aurora in the area, sparking excitement among celestial enthusiasts and photographers alike.

The optimal time to observe the northern lights is projected to be late Sunday night through early Monday morning at approximately 2 a.m. However, atmospheric conditions may play a significant role in visibility. Clouds and smoke from Canadian wildfires are expected to drift into Alabama, potentially obscuring the view of the sky.

Residents are encouraged to stay updated with the latest forecasts from the WVTM 13 Weather Team and are invited to share their pictures if they successfully capture the phenomenon. Submissions can be made directly through the free WVTM 13 app or website, and individuals can also reach out to Meteorologist Jordan West via Facebook for sharing experiences.

As the region prepares for this celestial event, all eyes will be turned toward the northern sky in hopes of witnessing a stunning display of nature’s beauty, reminding many that the universe can deliver extraordinary sights even from the southernmost parts.
