Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump announced that he will meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi next week. While praising Modi as a “fantastic” leader, Trump also referred to India as a “very big abuser” in terms of trade policies with the U.S. Trump did not provide additional details about the meeting, but the Indian Embassy in Washington did not respond to inquiries.
During his presidency, Trump visited India in 2020 with the goal of improving trade relations between the two countries. Modi is scheduled to visit the U.S. from Sept. 21 to 23, where he will participate in the Quad Leaders’ Summit hosted by President Joe Biden and speak at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. This will be Modi’s first visit to the U.S. since winning his third term in office in June.
Recent collaboration between the U.S. and India includes signing technology and defense deals, as well as partnering to improve the global semiconductor value chain. The U.S. Department of State announced a collaboration with the India Semiconductor Mission and India’s electronics and IT government body to enhance the semiconductor industry in both countries. This cooperation highlights the growing partnership between the U.S. and India in various sectors.
