Newsmax has reached a $40 million settlement agreement with Smartmatic following lawsuit

Last year, Newsmax agreed to pay Smartmatic $40 million as part of a settlement following the voting technology company’s defamation lawsuit against the right-wing news outlet. The settlement included a cash payment and an option to purchase stock in Newsmax, with $20 million already paid and the rest to be paid by July. Newsmax believes the settlement will eliminate future legal expenses related to the suit, including appellate actions. The lawsuit centered on Newsmax’s false claims that Smartmatic manipulated the 2020 presidential election in favor of Joe Biden. Smartmatic settled a similar lawsuit against One America News in April. The company is now focused on a case against Fox News, aiming to hold them accountable for their actions. Meanwhile, Fox Corp. settled with Dominion Voting Systems for $787.5 million in 2023 to resolve defamation claims. Newsmax, Smartmatic, and other parties involved are focused on settling legal disputes related to election misinformation.
