Potential Tropical Cyclone Six has formed over the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to become a tropical storm on Monday as it moves north along the coast. The system is likely to strengthen and become a hurricane before hitting the northwestern Gulf Coast midweek. Tropical storm watches have been issued for parts of northeastern Mexico, with additional warnings possible for southern Texas and Louisiana. The storm is currently located 555 miles south of Port Arthur, Texas, with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph. It is moving northwest at 5 mph, with a forecasted track to move just offshore of the northern Gulf Coast of Mexico through Tuesday and approach the Upper Texas and Louisiana coastline on Wednesday. The storm is expected to bring heavy rain and the risk of flash flooding to the affected areas, with expected rainfall totals of 4 to 8 inches and up to 12 inches possible in some areas. Minor coastal flooding is also possible along Mexico’s coast. The hurricane center warns that the potential for life-threatening storm surge and damaging winds is increasing for portions of the Upper Texas and Louisiana coastlines beginning Tuesday night.
