A new super PAC called Democracy Defenders, led by Democratic strategists, is focused on supporting legal efforts around election protection in anticipation of potential challenges and battles after Election Day. The group, chaired by Jim Messina and with Norm Eisen as outside counsel, aims to combat efforts by former President Donald Trump and his allies to undermine confidence in the election and challenge results in court. TJ Ducklo and Allegra Lawrence-Hardy are also part of the leadership team. The PAC plans to work with state parties and allied groups to ensure that every American can vote with confidence and without interference, starting with a $10 million budget for legal work and public messaging efforts. The goal is to allow the Harris campaign and other Democratic party leaders to prioritize turning out and persuading voters. There is concern that Republicans are better prepared than in previous elections to challenge results through legal means. The PAC’s mission extends beyond Election Day to defending democratic initiatives. The group believes that the threat to American democracy has grown since Trump’s actions following the 2020 election, and they plan to counter efforts to cast doubt on election results and support small-D democratic values.
