New Details Reveal Bryan Kohberger’s Online Habits in Idaho College Murder Case

In the months leading up to the tragic stabbing of four University of Idaho students in November 2022, Bryan Kohberger faced personal and academic difficulties as a criminology Ph.D. student at Washington State University. Students described him as overly demanding in his teaching assistant role, leading to confrontations with peers, prompting discussions with university administration.

Around this time, Kohberger’s cellphone records revealed extensive browsing of social media accounts belonging to female students at both universities, including some friends of the victims. Notably, three of the murdered students, Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, and Xana Kernodle, were followed by some individuals whose photos were found on Kohberger’s device.

On the night of the murders, November 12, the victims attended a football game and returned home late, where they were later attacked. Surveillance footage captured a white Elantra, identified as Kohberger’s car, repeatedly circling their residence. It is within a 13-minute window captured in the footage that the murders are believed to have occurred.

Following the incident, Kohberger’s online searches indicated a potential obsession with psychopathy and serial killers. In December, police gathered DNA evidence from a knife sheath found at the scene that was linked to Kohberger. By late December, after covertly collecting his family’s trash for testing, authorities had enough evidence to arrest him.

Kohberger, maintaining his innocence, faces four counts of first-degree murder and a burglary charge, with a trial set to begin. His lawyers have hinted at the possibility of an alternate suspect. Kohberger, reportedly detached during his arrest, has not publicly addressed the charges, but his defense team argues for considerations based on his cognitive and psychological profile.
