Montgomery’s New State House Set to Modernize Alabama’s Government Experience
Montgomery, AL – Every year, thousands of Alabama schoolchildren visit the State Capitol to witness government in action. However, they have also encountered outdated facilities characterized by cramped committee rooms, malfunctioning elevators, and limited visitor space. Addressing these issues, Alabama is embarking on a $350 million project to construct a new State House, set to enhance both legislative functions and public access.
The current State House, built in the 1960s, will be dismantled following the completion of the new building, paving the way for a green, park-like space aimed at improving community interaction and civic engagement. This transformation is designed to create a campus-style environment in downtown Montgomery, making the Capitol more inviting for school groups, visitors, and residents.
“This is a historically significant moment, as it marks the first state capital building constructed in the U.S. since Florida in the early ’80s,” said Alabama Secretary of the Senate Patrick Harris. The modern facility will incorporate advanced technology, featuring upgraded committee rooms and legislative chambers to facilitate live-streaming of meetings, thereby increasing transparency in government operations.
The Retirement Systems of Alabama (RSA) is funding the project, which is under budget and on schedule. RSA representative Nia Scott confirmed that by September 2024, 85% of the project will be contracted. Currently, two cranes are actively working to ensure efficient progress.
The new State House is anticipated to be finished by the end of 2026, with lawmakers set to hold their first legislative session in the facility in 2027. This development promises to significantly enhance the legislative process and visitor experience at Alabama’s Capitol.
