Nebraska and Alabama Farmers Face Off Against Weather Challenges

Challenges and Strategies Persist in Southern Farming as Weather Conditions Shift

Litchfield, NE – Farmers in Southern regions are adapting their strategies due to changing weather conditions and emerging challenges. According to local farmer Sanderson, timely irrigation is crucial, especially with 2,200 out of 3,600 acres of corn lagging behind in growth. He noted, "We chase moisture a little bit on those double-crop soybeans," leveraging irrigation to ensure crops germinate uniformly. Despite protective fungicides early on, he remains concerned about potential diseases in wheat, emphasizing the importance of harvesting at ideal moisture levels to prevent test weight loss due to rainfall.

Baranick from DTN reported that northern Alabama is expected to receive some showers over the weekend, potentially aiding crops. Meanwhile, farmers are grappling with a mechanical failure that delayed operations, highlighting the importance of seasonal preparation for parts and supplies.

In a nearby farming operation, Zoerb Farms’ early start to irrigation is driven by the need for consistent moisture. "We normally don’t set that pump until mid-to-late June," said Zoerb, referencing their creek pump. Despite rainfall gaps, the farm’s pivots are actively irrigating to ensure adequate moisture levels. Their corn is nearing the V3 stage, but they’re wary of damaging storms, as severe weather can pose significant risks to their crops.

While Zoerb has few issues sourcing parts locally, he faces tightening supplies of red diesel, necessary for irrigation. "The closest transport available would have to come from Omaha," he mentioned. Amid these agricultural challenges, family commitments remain, with sports seasons in full swing, necessitating resilience and adaptability from both farmers and their families.
