A recent study by Lending Tree highlights growing trends in remote work, revealing a significant portion of employees may not be as productive as they appear. Conducted by QuestionPro, the study surveyed 2,000 Americans aged 18 to 79 from May 1 to 6, 2025, focusing on remote work habits.
The findings indicate that nearly 40% of remote workers employ software and hacks to give the illusion of productivity. Notably, men are more likely to engage in these practices than women, with 44% versus 32%, respectively. Alongside this, a substantial 51% of respondents report generating extra income simultaneously while fulfilling their primary job responsibilities, with male workers again leading the trend (58% versus 42% for females).
Despite the challenges posed by remote work, especially for parents, many express reluctance to return to traditional office settings. Among remote workers with children under 18, 74% reported that they manage childcare while working, and 69% admitted to performing household chores during working hours. The study reveals that 52% work longer hours from home, while 18% find themselves putting in less time.
When it comes to a potential return to the office, 45% of workers oppose returning full-time, with resistance being stronger among men (49%) compared to women (40%). Interestingly, this opposition escalates for parents, where 54% prefer to stay remote.
The shift towards remote work has provided many professionals with a newfound flexibility, yet it has also led to creative coping mechanisms to balance work and personal life. As companies rethink their workplace strategies, understanding these dynamics will be essential for future policies.
