NASA launches SPHEREx telescope to study origins of the universe | Science & Technology

A new NASA telescope named SPHEREx was launched into space from California on Tuesday. The mission of this telescope is to explore the origins of the universe and search for hidden reservoirs of water in the Milky Way galaxy. SPHEREx will collect data on millions of galaxies and stars, creating a detailed map of the cosmos in 102 colors to study the evolution of galaxies.

The main goal of the mission is to deepen the understanding of cosmic inflation, which explains the rapid expansion of the universe after the Big Bang. By studying reverberations from the Big Bang, SPHEREx aims to uncover the origins of the universe within the first instants after the Big Bang occurred approximately 13.8 billion years ago.

Additionally, SPHEREx will investigate the presence of water and other molecules in interstellar dust clouds within our galaxy. The telescope will search for frozen water and other molecules on the surface of dust grains in these molecular clouds, where most of the universe’s water is believed to originate.

Along with SPHEREx, a constellation of satellites for NASA’s PUNCH mission was also launched to study the solar wind and its effects on Earth and the solar system. The PUNCH mission aims to understand the transition of the sun’s atmosphere to the solar wind and the formation of structures within the solar wind.

Overall, these missions represent significant steps in advancing our understanding of the universe, from exploring its origins to studying the solar wind and its impact on our planet and beyond.
