Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz was selected as Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate, but a national poll showed that 71% of Americans had never heard of him or didn’t have an opinion of him. In contrast, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, another top contender, was more known with 53% of people not having heard of him. Both parties will now work to introduce and define Walz to voters.
In his home state of Minnesota, Walz is fairly popular with a 54% approval rating among registered voters. This is similar to Shapiro’s approval rating in Pennsylvania. On the other hand, Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance has seen a decline in popularity since his selection by former President Donald Trump.
Recent polls found that Vance’s favorability rating has dropped to 34% with a net rating of minus-9 points, compared to 28% favorable in July. The turbulent month in the presidential race has also seen an assassination attempt on Trump, the Republican convention, and Biden’s exit from the 2024 campaign. Despite the changes, the 2024 contest has been reset to a more competitive political environment, with Democrats in a better position according to public polling.
