Montrose Residents Demand Input on W. Alabama Street Redesign

Montrose Residents Voice Concerns Over West Alabama Street Redesign

HOUSTON — Residents in Montrose are expressing their concerns regarding the ongoing redesign of West Alabama Street, a critical thoroughfare facing significant redevelopment. The project, overseen by the Montrose Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ), aims to enhance the stretch from Shepherd Drive to Spur 527.

At a town hall meeting held at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church on Saturday, community leaders and residents voiced their frustrations over feeling sidelined in the decision-making process. Joseph Panzarella, a local resident, emphasized the current deteriorated state of sidewalks and the absence of bike facilities, stating, “Anyone using this street right now is having issues.”

The original design for the street included protected bike lanes to promote biking, but the TIRZ board voted to revise the specifics, raising concerns that important changes for safety and accessibility may be overlooked. Alexander Spike, founder of Friends of the Boulevard and organizer of the town hall, highlighted the conflicting priorities at stake. “What’s our objective? Do we want to move as many vehicles as possible or move as many people as possible?” he queried.

With the redesign being developed, residents like Panzarella worry that plans are being altered “behind closed doors.” He stressed that improvements should prioritize safety for all users — pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike.

In response to these community concerns, Marlene Gafrick, Senior Advisor to the Mayor, stated that the redesign aligns with the Mayor’s Guiding Mobility Principles, focusing on preserving mobility lanes and enhancing pedestrian safety.

As residents await further details on the project, the timeline for the redesign of West Alabama Street remains unclear, with continued calls for greater transparency and community involvement in the planning process.
