Mizzou Assistant Coach Steps Down from Position

Mizzou Defensive Line Coach Al Davis Resigns to Focus on Family

Columbia, MO – Mizzou’s defensive line coach, Al Davis, announced his resignation through social media on Friday evening, citing personal reasons tied to family matters. Davis, who joined the coaching staff under head coach Eli Drinkwitz in 2021, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to coach at the University of Missouri and wished the program success as it looks toward the future.

In his statement, Davis said, "I’ve made the decision today to resign from my coaching position at the University of Missouri due to personal reasons to focus on family matters. I want to thank Coach Drinkwitz for giving me the opportunity to coach here over the last few years and wish the program well.”

In response to Davis’s departure, Coach Drinkwitz confirmed that David Blackwell will step into the role of defensive line coach. Drinkwitz stated, "I want to thank him for his time with us and wish him the best moving forward." He also highlighted Blackwell’s extensive experience, noting that "we’re fortunate to have a veteran in David to fill any additional coaching needs we might have at that position."

Blackwell has been with Mizzou since 2023, initially serving as an analyst before moving to an on-field role in 2024. With over 30 years in college coaching and 11 years as a defensive coordinator, Blackwell is well-equipped to lead the Tigers’ defensive line as preparations begin for the upcoming 2025 season.

Davis becomes the second defensive assistant coach to depart Mizzou since the conclusion of the 2024 season, following linebackers coach D.J. Smith, who left to assume the defensive coordinator role at his alma mater, Appalachian State. The Tigers are poised for a bright future under Drinkwitz’s leadership, even amidst these coaching changes.
