Micah Parsons Misses Second Week of Cowboys OTAs (Rightly So)

Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer commended linebacker Micah Parsons for attending the first week of OTA sessions, but Parsons was absent during the second week. While these workouts are voluntary, it’s argued that Parsons shouldn’t risk injury without a long-term contract, which he should have received a year ago. The Cowboys’ management appears to be mishandling the situation, causing costs to rise and leaving players unprepared as the season approaches. The scenario reflects a troubling pattern for the Cowboys, who historically delay negotiations with key players, leading to inflated contracts.

Last year, for instance, the team ended up overpaying for talents like wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and quarterback Dak Prescott due to their procrastination. Had Parsons been signed earlier, his contract would likely have been closer to $35 million annually instead of potentially exceeding $40 million now, especially with new market-setting contracts like Myles Garrett’s affecting negotiations. The longer the Cowboys wait, the harder negotiations will become, and Parsons may also risk missing critical preparation time for the regular season.

This mindset of delaying payments may be a factor in the Cowboys’ 30-year absence from the NFC Championship game. Owner Jerry Jones’ stubbornness in addressing his core players’ contracts promptly may not only impact player morale but could also become a media distraction rather than fostering team cohesion. In essence, timely contracts may help maintain a strong roster, but the Cowboys’ approach suggests an ongoing cycle of mismanagement in securing their top talent.
