Ravens’ Marlon Humphrey Reflects on Defense Ahead of New Season
Since Marlon Humphrey, a former star at Hoover High School, joined the Baltimore Ravens in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the team has excelled in regular-season wins—trailing only the Kansas City Chiefs. However, Baltimore has not reached the Super Bowl during this period, prompting Humphrey to acknowledge a sense of underachievement.
“I feel we’ve had championship-caliber rosters and prepared like a championship team. We’re not far off,” Humphrey stated, emphasizing the need to restore the Ravens’ defensive identity. Once known for its formidable defense, Humphrey feels the standard has slipped and is determined to reclaim it. “When you come back, it’s go time, and it’s all about the ball,” he added, highlighting the focus for the upcoming season.
The Ravens recently bolstered their defense with the signing of two-time Pro Bowler Jaire Alexander, enhancing an already robust secondary that includes cornerback Chidobe Awuzie and first-round draft pick Malaki Starks. Humphrey expressed excitement about the depth and versatility within the unit, stating that they could field multiple first-round caliber corners and adapt matchups as needed.
While Humphrey embraces different roles—including playing as a nickel corner—he has grown comfortable with these responsibilities since his early NFL days. “Whatever the coaches ask me to do, I’ll be excited to get on the field,” he affirmed.
As the Ravens prepare for training camp on July 22, excitement builds with a preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts on August 7. The team’s dedication to improving its defensive legacy remains palpable as they seek a path back to championship contention.
