James McIntyre, a 33-year-old man from Illinois, was arrested by U.S. Capitol Police for allegedly assaulting Rep. Nancy Mace, a Republican from South Carolina. Mace stated that she was physically accosted by someone who she claimed was a defender of transgender rights. She sustained injuries to her wrist and arm from the attack but expressed determination in the face of threats and violence.
Capitol Police did not provide further information about McIntyre or his possible association with transgender rights advocacy. The incident took place in the Rayburn House Office Building, where McIntyre was apprehended after entering the building, which was open to the public at the time. Mace had recently introduced a measure that would restrict the use of single-sex facilities in Congress based on biological sex, a response to the election of Sarah McBride as the first openly transgender member of Congress.
Last week, protesters opposed to Mace’s measure held a demonstration outside a House office building. Despite the incident and ongoing pushback, Mace remains steadfast in her beliefs. The details surrounding McIntyre’s motives and intentions remain unclear, as the investigation continues.
